Labor Pains

***Felicia***

Both Raheim and I have been living a fairytale existence for the last few weeks. A big part of it was avoiding the fact that he lost his brother and that we were about to become parents whether we are ready or not. Now that I am down to my last few weeks I’ve been trying to stay off my feet as much as possible. That is until the doctor told me I could help my labor along by walking. A few nights Rah drove us over to a local park and we walked around the track. He’s been better than patient with me and I can’t say that it’s been easy but he’s obliged each of my outrageous cravings no matter what time of day or not.

Last night was really special, though. Rah spoke directly into my belly and the baby continued to kick and move around. Raheim was just as fascinated as I was. He made me record my belly moving with each kick. Today he left me in the house alone to go meet up with Dre so I decided to take a walk to the corner store. I threw on a pair of black tights and one of Raheim’s t-shirts. More because I loved how he smelled and also it was the only shirt big enough to pull down over my belly.

Walking slowly down the front stairs to my house I waved to a few of my neighbors. The baby was weighing heavy on my bladder but I managed to waddle to the store. A few young guys were there grabbing bags of chips for what I was sure was the munchies. They both smelled like weed strong enough to make me feel like gagging. I grabbed a cranberry juice from the freezer and walked toward the back to see what type of snacks I wanted from there.

“No, I’m gonna say something to the bitch.” I heard from a female voice behind me. I didn’t turn to see who it was.

“Hey you.” The voice persisted. I turned to see who it was coming from. My heart stopped when I saw the same girl from the Mall standing there with an ‘I’m gonna fuck you up’ face. Not that I was scared of her but I couldn’t risk fighting while I was damn near nine months pregnant.

“Yes,” I answered calmly.

“Ain’t you the chick that was with Raheim the other day at the Mall?” she asked with a ratchet tone. I looked over her shoulder before answering. Another girl was standing behind her ready to instigate or get some shit started.

“Who is asking?” I answered just as sarcastic. I turned left and right to see what I could grab that would hurt her if something jumped off. There were a few glass jars within arm’s reach on the shelf.

“Bitch you don’t have to get smart, I just wanted to ask you a few questions.” She responded.

“What makes you think I have to answer any of your damn questions? Move out of my way.
